Our community is my passion.
She is currently the Sergeant at the Travis County Constable Precinct One office. In addition to attending Austin Community College, Colorado Tech, and Virginia College, she has received extensive training and currently holds her Advanced Peace Officer Proficiency Certificate and Civil Process Proficiency Certification. Tonya is a member of the JPCA (Justices of Peace and Constables Association) and was appointed to serve on the Civil Process Education Committee for the Texas Justice Court Training Center (TJCTC). She also serves on the Eastern Travis County Colony Park Advisory Committee and is a member of the National Council of Negro Women.
She was a 2017 panelist at the Big Data and Community Policing Conference, a 2018 panelist at the Excellence and Advancement Foundation “Counselors Over Cops” event, and strongly believes in community policing and that being actively involved is the only way to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community. She has taken on many volunteer opportunities and community leadership roles. She strives to give back while encouraging and inspiring others to do the same while keeping their trust and preserving the quality of life.
Transparency builds trust. Tonya will revisit policies to ensure the Constable’s Office is providing the best service possible. She will lead the effort to create a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) and ensure all deputies have their Mental Health Certification.
Constables are licensed police officers. Tonya wants to bring peace of mind to those frightened by police through community education, awareness, and involvement. By increasing patrols in residential areas, and including citizens in activities like housing development and neighborhood associations, we can achieve a safer and more informed community.
An issue personal to Tonya, the school-to-prison pipeline disproportionately affects communities of color, even in Austin. Tonya believes that early intervention and transparency, mentorships, maintaining a working relationship with the courts, and implementing youth programs will help disrupt this harmful tendency.
